Freedom Beach Koh Tao – Twin Beach In Koh Tao, Thailand

by David & Intan

Freedom Beach Koh Tao is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches on the south end of Koh Tao island in Thailand.

Itโ€™s super easy to reach, and there are lots of great opportunities here for chilling, snorkeling, kayaking, and just taking some amazing photos of the tropical scenery.

This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

What To Do At Freedom Beach

Freedom Beach is actually split into two separate beaches.

Both are nice and worth a visit! You can walk between them on a short trail through the trees, or you can kayak between them in just a few minutes.

This area is a very popular spot for kayaking, and you could use it as a good base for paddling to other nearby bays and beaches like Chalok Baan Kao Bay, Taa Toh Bay, and even Shark Bay.

Freedom Beach 1

This is the main beach and itโ€™s managed by Freedom Beach Resort.

Thereโ€™s a nice strip of white sand here and some small shady trees to sit under.

This beach is nice, but itโ€™s not especially appealing to me unless I was staying at the resort.

Freedom Beach 2

This is a second (smaller) beach across the rocks.

Itโ€™s more secluded, and if you have a drone you can get some amazing aerial photos here.

This is my favorite of the two beaches. Itโ€™s an awesome place to explore by kayak!

Entrance Fees

Thereโ€™s a fee of 100 baht (~$3 USD) per person collected at a stall on the main road.

This gives you access to Freedom Beach 1 and 2, Taa Toh Bay, and John Suwan Viewpoint.

If you go in the morning before 9 AM, thereโ€™s usually no one to collect the fee and itโ€™s possible to get in free.

We paid 50 baht just to visit John Suwan viewpoint, but then afterwards we were able to go down to the beaches as well, and no one asked us to pay anything extra.

How To Get There

Freedom Beach is located on the south end of Koh Tao island.

Itโ€™s just a 15 minute drive from the main pier and tourist areas at Sairee Beach, and many places will rent you a scooter for 150 Baht ($5 USD) to explore the island all day.

Even better, our hotel in south Koh Tao was close enough to walk there!

EXTRA: John Suwan Viewpoint

While youโ€™re here at Freedom Beach, donโ€™t forget to check out the nearby John Suwan viewpoint.

This is one of the best views on Koh Tao island, and itโ€™s just a short hike up to the top of the hill. From here you can see a panorama of the whole island!

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a hotel called Aukotan Place in south Koh Tao. The price was $23 USD for a big double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This hotel includes free buffet breakfast even though itโ€™s not mentioned on Booking.com. They also give a free daily transfer to and from the pier, and Sairee Beach, which was super handy, and they have scooter rentals for a good price.

The location of the hotel was perfect. Itโ€™s a 15 minute walk from Freedom Beach, Shark Bay, and John Suwan Viewpoint.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
